General Description of the Position
Under general supervision, act as athletic fields groundskeeper of a large high school; plan, personally perform, and as required, assign and oversee school landscape upkeep, athletic field maintenance and setup for scheduled events, both outdoor and indoor; and do related work as required.
Essential Functions
- Perform various groundskeeping duties to maintain attractiveness of school grounds and athletic fields.
- Set up for athletic events.
- Maintain lawns, shrubs, trees, and flower beds.
- Cut and trim grass areas, and fertilize lawns and grounds as required.
- Spray insecticides, weed killer, and apply other weed control chemicals, etc., as necessary.
- Maintain grounds and parking areas free of garbage.
- Layout and move water lines to irrigate athletic fields.
- Drag, level, plow, and disc athletic areas as necessary.
- Prepare and seed as required.
- Maintain groundskeeping machines and equipment.
- Maintain and repair grounds irrigation system.
- Detect and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions to the appropriate person.
- Prepare and set up areas for indoor and outdoor athletic events (including football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, baseball, track, and tennis).
- Set up athletic equipment, bleachers, water stations, mats, chairs, etc., and mark lines on fields and tracks for scheduled athletic events.
- Maintain cleanliness of athletic areas before and after events.
- Operate and maintain a variety of motorized machinery, hand and power tools, etc., displaying constant and appropriate awareness of safety.
- Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
- Prepare work schedules, and periodically oversee and train others in safely performing various groundskeeping duties.
- Maintain necessary records and move materials as necessary in the performance of the job or as directed.
- Perform other related duties as required or directed by the supervisor.
Minimum Requirements
- Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade is preferred.
- At least two years in the landscape maintenance trade is preferred.
- Must possess knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of groundskeeping machines and equipment.
- Must have a valid driver's license and a safe vehicle operation record.
- Knowledge of accepted methods and practices of maintaining athletic fields for the high school level of competition.
- Knowledge of necessary methods and practices for maintaining the existing school district landscape needs and requirements for keeping buildings, grounds, and playground equipment in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
- Ability to periodically oversee and instruct others in safely performing groundskeeping work.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective, professional relationships and work in harmony with supervisors, other staff, students, and the general public.
- Genuine enjoyment and understanding of children, paired with an awareness of the general purposes and goals of public education.
- Willingness to operate according to district policies and procedures.
- Successful completion of criminal history verification requirements.
- Physical and mental skills and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of the position.
Physical Requirements
The position requires the physical and mental skills necessary to perform all essential functions, which may include standing, walking, sitting, driving, grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manipulation, wrist twisting, bending, squatting, climbing, and reaching above the shoulder. Environment includes both indoor and outdoor work.
- Medium Work: Lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Heavy Work: Lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Very Heavy Work: Lifting objects in excess of 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects of 50 pounds or more.
