About This Position
Behind-the-wheel instructors conduct driving lessons for students (primarily ages 15-17) with varied levels of experience. This position is on the road in real time driving in a driver's education training car with a passenger side brake pedal. This position requires scheduling flexibility, as the number of lessons scheduled each day/each week cannot be guaranteed. This position is part-time and may include weekends. Daylight and night time driving hours are required.
General Duties
- Provide driving instruction to help make students safe and responsible drivers
- Follow the PLAYBOOK curriculum and flow chart as outlined by the program
- Learn and understand the drive routes provided; familiarity with the city of Canby is helpful
- Represent Canby School District Driver Education Program as a skilled professional driving instructor
- Keep training cars neat and report mechanical problems immediately
- Fill car with gas at the end of each shift
- Communicate to families and students any areas of opportunity to work on while practicing behind-the-wheel sessions at home
- Complete drive assessment documentation for each student at the end of behind-the-wheel sessions
- Communicate with and respond to Driver Education coordinator in a timely manner
- Other duties as required by the Driver Education coordinator
Minimum Requirements
- Successful completion of the Western Oregon University Traffic Safety Education course
- Residency in the state of Oregon; must have held a valid Oregon driver's license for at least five years with a clean driving record
- Access to a cell phone
- 21 years of age or older
- Have or obtain current CPR/First Aid certification
- Successful completion of criminal background check
- Comfortable driving in all weather conditions day and night
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit in the car for long periods
- Lift 20-30-lbs of equipment/cones out of the trunk when required
- Ability to get in and out of an automobile several times a day, react quickly to emergencies, and properly use the instructor brake.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge and understanding of current Oregon traffic laws
- Must be reliable and punctual and enjoy working with teens and families
Applicant agrees to assume cost and arrange for FINGERPRINT-BASED CRIMINAL RECORDS CHECK upon offer of employment. ($10-$20 at printing; $66 payroll deduction)
