Canby High School is hiring multiple AVID tutors for the 2023-24 school year. This is a great opportunity for college students, retirees, or other individuals with a background in education looking for flexible work hours.
AVID tutors work 5.5 hours per day two days per week, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

About This Position
AVID tutors play an invaluable role in the success of the AVID program by tutoring high school students in English, Math, Science, and/or Social Studies and serving as a member of their academic support team. Based on a carefully-designed curriculum, Socratic tutorial method, and motivational activities, the AVID program is generally one that students are enrolled in for several years of their academic career, making tutors' commitment and dependability essential to students' academic and social growth. Tutors are trusted advocates who possess and impart an enthusiasm for learning and college readiness while sharing their own experiences in overcoming difficulty to inspire students to fulfill their full potential.
Essential Functions
- Become familiar with the 10-Step AVID Tutorial process
- Participate in all required trainings, professional development sessions, and meetings
- Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students
- Establish and maintain rapport with students
- Tutor students in small study groups or individually, assisting them in all subject areas based on the class and text notes they have collected in their AVID binders
- Determine from student notes and discussions the concepts that need to be taught or re-taught
- Facilitate student learning in a challenging, yet supportive, tutoring environment
- Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and text notes, book notes, etc.
- Assist in developing a resource file of enrichment materials for use in tutorial sessions
- Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for all AVID students to follow
- Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator regarding student progress and areas of concern
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be dependable and serve as an advocate for the students’ academic and social growth
- Ability to establish and maintain trusting, effective, professional relationships and work in partnership with supervisors, other staff, students, and general public
- Follow district policies and procedures
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information at all times
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
Preferred Qualifications
- 72 college level credits or currently enrolled in college/university
- Bilingual in Spanish
